While Austin might not be the best place to find superior barbecue, I do consider it the epicenter. You can drive an hour in any direction and find fantastic barbecue. You can go north to Mueller's or Vencil's in Taylor. If you go west, you'll hit Coopers in Llano. East is for sausage in Elgin.
Dad and I drove south to Lockhart. We first hit up Smitty's, which is the old Kreuz's Market.
Brisket, ribs, an onion slice, a pickle, a hunk of cheddar and of course pillowy soft white bread. And two iced teas.
No forks, no plates. You really don't need them.
After some good, but not great brisket, we drove to Kreuz's to try theirs while Smitty's was still on our palate.
We hadn't planned on a second lunch, which is why our portions are so small.
Hahaha, just kidding.
After the first bite at Kreuz's, it was pretty obvious that it's far superior to the sister's place at Smitty's.
