Barbecue worth driving 45 minutes for

Didn't make it to Lockhart or Taylor, but those would qualify under the 45 minute window. We went out to the Salt Lick with about half of Erinn's playgroup. Even being exhausted from the previous night, I wasn't going to pass up Salt Lick.

Now that Simon is trucking, this is a familiar sight. Simon charging ahead, with Mom's angel wings right behind making sure he doesn't crack a skull.

"Hat"

There was just enough room for two high chairs on each end of the table. Two for Reese and Henry H...

The other two for Jack and Henry L...

Which put Simon right in the middle of Erinn and me. How he got sauce in his eyebrows is still a mystery.

Henry H. had the right idea with the rib, and still managed to keep his eyebrows clean.

Adios James and Corrie (til October)

We helped throw a party for James and Corrie who are getting married in October, but leaving for Colorado this week (well, half of them).

In preparation of living in Colorado, we turned the party site into a campsite.

Frankly, after this picture, I stopped taking pictures until the very end when everything was winding down. My bad.

Toddler Time

(Erinn posting) This week marks the beginning of toddlerdom. First of all, Simon is officially walking independently. Second, he is talking up a storm. He signs about 45 words and says about 20 words. But most importantly, I realized we had a toddler when I walked into the playroom to this...

I am sure we have many more of these moments to look forward to. By the way, I swear I only stepped away for 30 seconds.

Hey baby, it's the Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is kind of our one year anniversary of moving back to Austin. It was fitting that we celebrated out at the lake. As so often happens, the 4th revolved around food.

Before & After shots of the brisket:

We made homemade ice cream
Mom picked a lot of figs.

Simon contemplated the enormity of the situation:

But in the end, playing peek-a-boo was more fun than discussing existentialism:

Last Day in Louisiana

There are only a couple states that can rival Texas as far as cuisine goes. California & New Mexico come to mind. But for Louisiana to be so close to Texas and have food so different, it's got to be right up there. (yes New Mexico and Texas are also neighbors, but the population density isn't quite the same as it is along the Sabine). Here are my favorite foods that aren't slow smoked or wrapped in a tortilla:

The oyster po boy:

Seafood gumbo (with potato salad):

Fried catfish and alligator. Tastes better with family at Erinn's uncle's fishing camp:

Boiled crabs:

The Waguespacks:

See you next time Louisiana.

More from the farm

Boring pictures, but we really liked the place we were staying. Here's some more shots from the farm. Food and Fishing Camp pics to follow.
